The Global Tamil Council in a letter today, thanked the Candaian Foreign Minister, Honourable Melanie Joly for the groundbreaking sanctions she announced on two of the former presidents of Sri Lanka.

Mahinda gotabaya Jan 10 2023"This long awaited announcement has come as a new year’s gift to the Tamil Canadians and the entire Tamil Diaspora impacted by the international atrocity crimes committed against the Tamils, by the successive governments of Sri Lanka, and its security forces since independence" the letter noted.

The imposition of these sanctions, on the two most sought perpetrators of Genocide, in the history of Sri Lanka, namely; Mahinda Rajapakse and Gotabaya Rajapakse, Canada has set precedence to the rest of the Core-Group member states and the EU member states on handling continued impunity in Sri Lanka. These sanctions are also a warning signal to the present Sri Lankan regime and its leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, to abide by international norms and uphold the obligations under international law. The letter further said.
